7. Escape from the Maze Prison, 1983
This daring action is the loudest escape in the history of Britain. Maze prison was considered one of the most reliable in Europe, however, 38 members of the Irish Republican Army overcame two five-meter barriers and escaped to freedom. Of the 38 fugitives, 18 were caught in the early days, several more were later found in the United States.
6. The Escape of Pascal Payet, 2007
Pascal went to jail for the murder committed during the robbery of a collection vehicle. Twice he managed to make not very successful shoots, each time returning to jail. However, in 2007 Payet’s accomplices hijacked a helicopter in Cannes, on which they landed directly on the roof of the prison and literally “recaptured” the prisoner from the guard. A helicopter was later found on the Mediterranean coast, but no traces of a daring gang were found.
5. The escape of John Dillinger, 1934
The story of this American robber formed the basis of a Hollywood picture with Johnny Depp. On account of Dillinger several escapes, however, he made the loudest from the considered impregnable prison Crown Point. With a wooden gun painted black with shoe polish, John forced the guards to open the bolts and left the prison.
4. The Escape of Julian Shotard, 2009
Sentenced for the arson of Shotard, they were sent to serve their sentences at Pentonville Prison in London. However, the prisoner did not even get to his cell. Having strayed from the group, Shotard ducked under the bottom of the van that brought him to the place of detention. Clinging to the crossbars under the bottom, the offender safely left the prison. True, a few weeks later the offender personally appeared in the police and surrendered to the authorities.
3. Escape from Alcatraz, 1962
This prison was considered the most reliable of all. But Frank Morris with his two brothers John and Clarence Anglins managed to accomplish the incredible. All three managed to get to the roof through the ventilation system and chimneys, and then, having gone down the wall, floated away on a rubber raft by sea. The absence of criminals went unnoticed for a long time, because on their bunks, they placed fake heads made expertly from a mixture of soap and toilet paper and decorated with hair.

Seven inmates decided to escape from the John Connally Unit prison, taking advantage of election day. When they were taken out to vote, the criminals took hostage 9 civilian observers, 4 security guards and 3 prisoners not involved in the escape. The gang was not at large for long - criminals were caught thanks to the television show America’s Most Wanted, where they show those who are wanted.
1. Escape from Billy Hayes from a Turkish prison, 1970
Hayes was convicted by the Turkish authorities for drug smuggling and sentenced to life imprisonment. After serving in prison for 4 years, Hayes gained the trust of one of the guards, who, ultimately, managed to disarm by deception. Wearing the uniform of a guard, Billy left the prison, dyed his blond hair dark and walked towards Greece. He turned the story of his escape into a literary work, writing an autobiography.
