We present you the top 10 most popular cat breeds in Russia and the world according to the Association of Cat Lovers (CFA).

There are about 600 million domestic cats in the world. This is more than any other domestic animals, even dogs (there are more than half a billion, according to a marketing study conducted by dog food companies).

Cats are clean, do not require a daily walk, they are easy (and most importantly nice) to keep. However, when choosing a pet, which you will take to the house, you should take into account not only its appearance, but also how popular this or that breed is. Popular means well studied. That is, you can easily find information about the habits, diseases, temperament and other characteristics of the animal. And already on the basis of this information you can make an informed decision about whether such a cat is suitable for you or not.

10. Siberian cat

One of the most popular cat breeds in Russia is amazing both for its beauty and its safety for allergy sufferers. Yes, Siberians with excellent long fur are suitable for many people who are allergic to the hair of ordinary cats.

This is due to the fact that in the body of Siberian cats low intensity of the secretion of the Fel D1 protein, which is responsible for allergic reactions. Moreover, in cats, this protein is produced in smaller quantities than in cats.

Siberian cats are distinguished by a calm and balanced character, they get along well with children, get along with dogs and other domestic animals.

9. Exotic Shorthair Cat

For several years in a row, representatives of this breed were named CFA by the most popular registered cat in America.

Exot is a cross between Persians and Shorthair American cats. They meet the standards of the Persian breed in almost all respects, with the exception of one: wool. Exotic cats, unlike their Persian counterparts, have short, thick and dense fur, which makes them popular among people who love the personality of Persians, but do not want to take care of their pet's hair daily.

In nature, exotic cats are also similar to Persian: they are affectionate, calm and playful. Exotics are known to show more affection and devotion to their master than other cats, and usually follow people around the house.

8. Ragdoll

If you need a cat that will constantly ask for "pens", and follow you everywhere, hoping to attract attention, then it's better than not to find a pet ragdoll. One of the largest and most fluffy cat breeds got its name for its ability to relax and go soft in the hands of its owner like a rag doll.

These beautiful, kind and intelligent animals are greatly appreciated for their gentle nature and ability to get along with young children. Even when playing, they do not release their claws.

7. British Shorthair

It is believed that the ancient Romans brought British Shorthair to England in the first century AD. Many years later, the British Shorthair cat was crossed with Persian cats, which slightly changed the appearance of the breed and increased the thickness of its fur coat.

This is not only one of the most popular cat breeds, it is also one of the most media cats. You can recognize the British Shorthair in many Whiskas brand ads. By the way, the Cheshire cat in “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” and the cat that rose from the dead in the 1989 film “Pet Cemetery” also belong to this breed.

The British are not as active as the Siamese, and perhaps not as affectionate as the Sphinxes and Scottish fold cats. But they are very smart, do not impose their society and are loyal to all members of the family. They can remain alone for a long time, which is why they earned the nickname "cats for businessmen."

6. Scottish fold cat

Sweet nature and modest disposition - these are the main advantages of representatives of this breed. Distinctive features of Scottish fold cats are ears bent forward and down, which bring something like an owl to their appearance. However, in some kittens the ears remain straight, such are called "Scottish straight."

It is known that Scottish fold cats have a relaxed disposition and are very friendly with people and other pets. They are easy to train. And these cats can sleep on their backs, which looks very moving.

This breed is famous for its unusual, slightly creaky voice and the ability to "pronounce" many different sounds that you will not hear in most other cat breeds.

5. Abyssinian cat

The Abyssinians have long, slender legs, and their hair is short and closely adjacent to the body. Their appearance resembles the exquisite figurines of ancient Egyptian cats. And this is not surprising, because the ancestors of Abyssinian cats, according to researchers of this breed, lived on the territory of ancient Egypt.

Abyssinians are affectionate, loyal to children and usually get along well with other pets. Known for their curiosity, playfulness and the need to explore the environment, these animals are entirely people-oriented and love to participate in events taking place around them.

4. Sphinx

This hairless, wrinkled miracle with large ears and pronounced cheekbones is one of the new breed of cats. The first sphinx was born in Canada in 1966, and the lack of hair was a genetic anomaly that occurs about once every 15 years. This makes the sphinx one of the most expensive cat breeds in the world.

Since that time, the Sphynx breed has become very popular, which was facilitated not only by the unique “alien” appearance, but also by the behavior of these animals. Sphinxes are definitely companion cats. They are energetic, kind and playful, and love to be in the spotlight.

Since the skin of the sphinxes is very susceptible to heat and cold, these cats should be protected from natural exposure. This does not mean that they cannot go out; they just should not live on the street.

And sphinxes are often called hypoallergenic cats, but this is not so. Particles of their skin and sweat can cause allergies.

3. Siamese cat

An angel outside and a devil inside is a short portrait of the most popular cat in Russia: Siamese. She is obstinate, temperamental and stubborn, and will not lag behind the owner until she achieves her. And Siamese people have a very loud voice, which can annoy people who love peace and quiet in their home.

But you forgive them everything for the incredible beauty of blue eyes and charming soft wool of black and fawn color.

2. Maine Coon

The main thing that you should know about Maine Coons is very big and kind kittens! Some representatives of this breed can weigh 12 kg, and reach a meter in length.

Maine Coons are the natives of North America. The name maine coon is translated as “Manx raccoon”, and the second name of this breed is the Manx raccoon cat.

Some believe that the ancestors of these cats were brought to America by the Vikings. And considering that Maine Coons have luxurious long hair and dense undercoat adapted to a cold climate, we can believe that these harsh-looking animals were faithful companions of no less severe Vikings, and colonized America long before Columbus. However, this assumption is confirmed only by the similarity of Maine Coon with the Norwegian forest cat - one of the most beautiful cat breeds.

Maine Coon is the best choice if you are looking for a very dedicated and friendly breed for the family.

1. Persian cat

The most popular breed of cats in the world is the embodiment of laziness and tranquility, which is why they have earned the reputation of "sofa cats". They are easily recognizable thanks to a wide and snub nose, puffy cheeks and large eyes. Because of their short nose, the Persians snore or snore heavily in a dream.

It is believed that these cats appeared in Persia (now Iran), and were named after their country of origin. Although the breed has evolved over time in color and body type, one thing remains the same: thick and very soft fur.

Because of it, the Persians require careful care. Otherwise, they look very untidy and miserable, covered with numerous warlocks. So if you are too lazy to comb out your pet daily and feed it with the best dry food, to maintain a healthy coat, then the Persian breed is not for you.
